Bathmawathy is an internationally recognized self-taught artist whose work bridges meticulous realism with a profound sense of emotional presence. My work begins with observation, but it is not about representation alone. I am drawn to the emotional presence of animals—the quiet, often overlooked expressions that exist beyond movement or action. In these moments of stillness, I find a depth that feels both familiar and distant, inviting a more contemplative way of seeing.Through my wildlife paintings, I aim to create a space where the viewer pauses. I am less interested in portraying animals as subjects, and more in revealing a sense of being—something subtle, unspoken, yet deeply felt. The gaze, in particular, becomes central to my work, acting as a point of connection between the human and the non-human.Material plays an important role in this process. I work with layered surfaces, combining mediums to build depth and texture, allowing certain areas to emerge while others recede. This balance between clarity and softness mirrors the emotional ambiguity I seek to convey.
